Council Designee: Rachana Bhowmik, Deputy Cabinet Secretary

Rachana “Ruchi” Bhowmik is the Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Cabinet Secretary in the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs.    

Prior to joining Cabinet Affairs, she served as Special Assistant to the President and Policy Advisor to the Office of the Chief of Staff in the White House.  In that role she served as the principal advisor to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and interacted with Senior Administration officials and Federal agencies to develop and implement policy in issue areas such as energy, jobs and the economy, education, veterans and health care reform. 

Ruchi has worked for President Obama for more than six years.  After he was elected to the U.S. Senate, she joined his Senate staff as Legislative Counsel and later was promoted to Legislative Director.

In her capacity on the Hill, Ruchi worked on judiciary issues such as privacy and civil rights, women’s issues, veterans issues and national security issues, including defense, intelligence reform and homeland security.  

A native of Nashville, Tennessee, she is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law.
