Update on Advisory Council's Activities

Summary:
Melissa Rogers shares a brief update and overview of the recent work of the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Friends, below is an update from the chair of the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, Melissa Rogers:

We’d like to share a brief update and overview of the recent work of the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.  In October 2009, the Council held an in-person meeting and released its draft recommendations for strengthening government partnerships with nonprofits, both faith-based and secular, in six different issue areas: Economic Recovery and Domestic Poverty; Environment and Climate Change; Fatherhood and Healthy Families; Global Poverty and Development; Inter-religious Cooperation; and Reform of the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.   At the October meeting, Council members discussed these reports and offered feedback on them.

In December 2009 and January 2010, the Council held deliberative calls to discuss subsequent drafts of these recommendations.    You may listen to the recorded Council calls by using the dial-in information provided below.   During these calls, Council members offered comments and suggestions on the draft recommendations.

At the end of January 2010, the Council held votes on two issues that will be discussed in the part of the final report that pertains to various recommended reforms for the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.  Council members have been able to come to agreement on the overwhelming majority of recommended reforms in this area, but they have been unable to agree on two particular matters.  The vote tallies have been posted here, and they will be reflected in the final report.  As noted in an earlier post, the actual votes of Council members also are publicly accessible.

At the end of February, the Council will hold two additional deliberative calls to discuss the draft recommendations.  More information about those calls is posted here.  The Council will hold a vote on adoption of the final report, either on a call or during an in-person meeting.  The Council plans to hold its final in-person meeting in March 2010.  Details on that meeting will appear on this website.   The Council will release its final report at that time.

If you would like to see a copy of the draft recommendations of the Council, please contact whpartnerships@who.eop.gov. Please also feel free to contact us with other questions.

Thanks again for your interest in the work of the Council.
