Today, Jon Bon Jovi and technology companies Gilt Groupe, GroupMe and Onswipe are announcing their commitment to support Summer Jobs+ through the SummerQAmp initiative.
In January, President Obama announced Summer Jobs + to support low-income and disconnected youth by providing pathways for summer internships and training. Jon Bon Jovi, a member of the White House Council for Community Solutions, decided to take action in his private capacity and challenge technology companies to “educate and train young people who might not ordinarily consider a career in technology.” Today, Jon Bon Jovi and technology companies Gilt Groupe, GroupMe and Onswipe are announcing their commitment to support Summer Jobs+ through the SummerQAmp initiative. SummerQAmp will train a new workforce in high-tech skills and help create tech jobs for American youth by providing software quality assurance internships.
Quality Assurance (QA) is a fundamental part of the software development process, making sure today’s web sites, mobile apps and software applications run error-free. For young people interested in becoming software developers, working in quality assurance is a great first step in learning more about software development and finding opportunities in the technology industry.
SummerQAmp has also made a “life skills” pathway pledge to provide online training. Together, in partnership with CK-12, they will build an online course to introduce youth to software development.
Thanks to initiatives like SummerQAmp, youth are better prepared to enter the 21st century workforce, armed with the tools to succeed in a digital economy. We thank SummerQAmp and the other participants in Summer Jobs+ for their commitments.
The SummerQAmp movement seeks to promote QA as a career path and is asking software and mobile app developers across the Nation to commit to creating 1,000 QA internships at their organizations this summer. This initiative will help keep the United States at the forefront of innovation by creating tech jobs for American youth and training a new workforce in high-tech skills. Some of the notable tech companies that have committed to take on at least one QA intern each this summer include GroupMe, Gilt Groupe, Onswipe, Boxee, eBay, and the CK-12 Foundation
