Last week, following the publishing of a new series on maternal and child nutrition in the medical journal The Lancet , governments, donors, non-profits, academia, and the private sector came together to focus on undernutrition at events in London and Washington, DC. The events provided an opportunity for the United States and other participants to highlight existing and planned actions to address undernutrition.

President Obama announced today that he has approved a new round of humanitarian assistance, an additional $155 million to provide for the urgent and pressing needs of civilians in Syria and refugees forced to flee the violence of the Assad regime. This brings America’s contribution to date to $365 million, making the United States the largest single donor of humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.

Holdren joined USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah in launching the Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN) – a groundbreaking partnership between USAID and seven top universities that is designed to harness the ingenuity of faculty and students to help solve global development challenges.

In 2010, Erik Schultz helped launch Thriive, a nonprofit organization that pursues an innovative approach to food security in diverse worldwide locations such as Vietnam, Kenya, Palestine, and Nicaragua. Focusing on the growing needs of small-scale agricultural and food products businesses, such as, smallholder farms and livestock operations, Thriive helps grow the entire food chain, from producers to consumers, making them more resilient and self-reliant.

USDA was honored to join forces with USAID and Islamic Relief USA to host the department’s 4th annual Iftar celebration. The event welcomed over 170 guests, including representatives from humanitarian organizations, faith-based groups and federal employees. This year’s Iftar called attention to the importance of reducing food insecurity abroad with the theme “Feed the Future: Together We Can.”

The USAID is launching a Food Security Open Data Challenge to bring together technologists, food security experts, entrepreneurs, and others to work with key datasets and determine how many can support solutions to the most pressing issues in food security.
