Description
The federal government currently offers information and services to the public through an array of more than 1,200 websites. Too often, these sites are organized around the federal bureaucracy, rather than the needs of citizens our government is meant to serve. As a result, it’s hard to find information and services, discover other relevant content and offer constructive feedback. There must be a better way. The open and collaborative ethic brought by the social web offers an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine the relationship between the federal government and its citizens through an online footprint developed not only for the people, but also by the people. Inspired by President Obama's call for a smarter, leaner government, innovative models of collaboration in the private sector, and groundbreaking state, local and international efforts, the US CTO, the US CIO, and the White House Director of Digital Strategy are creating a team to rapidly prototype a streamlined and intuitive system for presenting information and accepting feedback around the needs of citizens.
Skill Sets Needed
An effective team will require editors who understand both the importance of accessible content, search engine behavior and approaches for content management at the scale of the US government; designers who understand both user experience and information architecture; community managers who spark and cultivate critical participation; and engineers who champion agile, collaborative development and web standards. The project team will work within an experimental, safe harbor that offers the same flexibility for web development and social integration within government that is the standard everywhere else. These are compensated positions.
Timeframe
The Presidential Innovation Fellows selected for MyGov are expected to work with top government innovators in Washington, DC from July 2012 until January 2013.
