Food Safety and Inspection Service

The mission of the Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is to ensure that the Nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled and packaged. This mission is carried out by inspecting products and handling and processing facilities.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • FSIS' purpose and planning has a clear and significant role in protecting the Nation's food supply.
  • The program has been effective in reducing incidences of food borne illness. However, the program is not optimally designed to address food safety.
  • The current inspection system does not allow FSIS to fully meet its strategic and performance goals and improve efficiencies.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Implementing a risk-based inspection system beyond the current pilot program.
  • Analyzing administrative and headquarters staff needs, reviewing the organizational structure, and determining the most effective and efficient organization.
