Open Government Partnership

“In just three short years, this partnership has grown from eight nations to 64, helping to transform the way governments serve their citizens. Together, we have made more than 2,000 commitments — improving how governments serve more than two billion people worldwide.”

— President Obama, Sept. 24, 2014, in remarks about the Open Government Partnership at the United Nations

President Obama launched the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2011 at the U.N. General Assembly meeting with seven other heads of state and an equal number of leaders from civil society. The OGP has grown to a global coalition of 64 governments and hundreds of civil-society organizations.

OGP countries represent one-third of the world’s population and have made more than 1,000 open government reform commitments. The United States has led OGP efforts as a member of the Steering Committee since its founding and also carries out OGP efforts domestically through establishment and implementation of Open Government National Action Plans.
