MESSAGE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE: Cecilia Muñoz on Memorial Day and the Senate’s Bipartisan Immigration Reform Vote

In this week’s message, Cecilia Muñoz paid tribute to our men and women in uniform who have died in service to our country. Cecilia also talked about President Obama and Vice President Biden’s moving meeting with DREAMers and families of undocumented immigrants and she praised this week’s strong bipartisan vote in the Senate for commonsense immigration reform.

Message from the White House

May 25, 2013

Hi, I am Cecilia Muñoz, Assistant to the President and Director of the Domestic Policy Council.

On Monday, we celebrate Memorial Day. It’s an important moment to honor and remember all the men and women who have given their lives in service to this country we love. They are heroes, each and every one.  And because of their sacrifice, we are who we are today—a free and prosperous nation.

This week, I had the honor of meeting two veterans who visited the White House for a very special meeting in the Oval Office with President Obama, Vice President Biden, DREAMers and family members of undocumented immigrants.

The President and the Vice President were moved by the stories of courage and determination these young people shared. It was an important opportunity for the President and the Vice President to hear directly from people whose families are affected daily by our nation’s broken immigration system.

On that same day, the Senate moved one step closer to passing commonsense immigration reform, as the Senate Judiciary Committee voted with a strong bipartisan majority in support of reform that fixes our immigration system.

And while the current bill is not perfect, it does represent an important step towards the broad principles that the President has made clear need to be part any immigration reform packaged.

Also this week, the President nominated Katherine Archuleta for the Director of the Office of Personnel Management. If she is confirmed, Katherine would be the first Latina to head this agency.

Katherine and Thomas Pérez, the Labor Secretary nominee are two highly qualified candidates and we look forward to their swift confirmation.

Thank you.
