Saying Thanks to our Troops on Veterans Day

I am Captain Todd Veazie, and I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of Joining Forces.

As an active duty Naval Special Warfare officer with 26 years of service, I am proud to follow a long line of citizen soldiers dating back to the birth of our Republic.  It is a special privilege for me to join First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden in their important work to give back to those who have given so much.

For 93 years Americans have come together on November 11th to honor the valor and sacrifice of those who have served in our Armed Forces. Originally, the day was set aside to celebrate the veterans of the First World War. Later, it was broadened to include every man and woman who has worn the uniform of the United States. And today, we continue that tradition by honoring the service and sacrifice of our troops, our veterans and their families.  They are the treasure of our nation and the greatest of every generation.

Joining Forces was launched in April 2011 because the First Lady and Dr. Biden believe that this commemoration and spirit of gratitude should endure throughout the year.  Only one percent of Americans are serving in our military, but their success would not be possible without the love and support of the families who serve right alongside them.   All Americans should know about their sacrifices.  Our mission at Joining Forces is to encourage every sector of our society to honor, recognize and support our veterans and military families who embody the very best of our enduring American values.

America has stepped up and answered the call.  Businesses are hiring and training more veterans and spouses – 125,000 in the past year alone. Nonprofit organizations and educators across the country are working to support military children, and thousands of our countrymen have committed to many millions of hours of service to their communities.  How will you give back?
