Meet Mallory Lindgren, a project manager at a Minnesota-based land and energy development consulting firm, and the latest profile in the Energy Department’s #WomenInSTEM video series. This series celebrates the amazing work of women across the energy sector while providing a new generation of students with a diverse set of role models as they begin their careers in science.

Mallory’s interest in STEM (short for science, technology, engineering, and math) dates back to her childhood and a curiosity about the how the Earth’s natural systems work. Growing up, Mallory’s mother encouraged this inquisitiveness through Star Trek and other science-based TV shows. But it was an environmental science class in college that helped Mallory understand how different fields of science are related and led to a degree in hydrology and, eventually, her career in the energy sector.

As an employee at Westwood Professional Services, Mallory assists clients with siting wind and solar projects across the country. Using geographic information systems or GIS — mapping software that she compares to “a real-life videogame” — Mallory assesses how various constraints, such as wetlands or an airport, may interact with potential renewable energy projects. Her aim is to site and design projects that can effectively co-exist with the surrounding environment.

It’s a job that makes a difference, and that’s important to her as a new mother. “One thing that’s exciting for me is to know that my work now is making a cleaner future for my son,” says Mallory.

Because science has always been such a strong force in Mallory’s life, she understands the importance of mentoring young women who are looking to enter STEM fields. Through involvement in both local and national programs with youth, Mallory is dedicated to inspiring students and getting them excited about science.
