President Trump Meets with Italian Leaders in Rome

Yesterday evening, President Donald J. Trump arrived at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome, Italy, the third stop on his first international trip.

This morning, after visiting the Vatican, President Trump participated in bilateral meetings with President Sergio Mattarella of Italy and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni of Italy.

The leaders discussed the alliance between the United States and Italy, as well as priorities in the areas of defense cooperation, counterterrorism, and efforts to deny terrorists safe havens from Mali to Libya to Iraq to Afghanistan.

President Trump thanked Italy for its contributions to global counterterrorism efforts, especially its participation in the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS and its active role in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also complimented Italy on its important diplomatic efforts to end the violence in Libya.

The President and the Italian leaders also discussed goals for the G7 Summit in Taormina, where they will be later this week.

This morning, the President and First Lady departed Rome, Italy en route to Brussels, Belgium for the NATO Leaders Meeting.
