Readout of Vice President Harris Call with King Abdullah II of Jordan
Vice President Kamala Harris spoke today with King Abdullah II of Jordan to reaffirm the United States’ strong support for Jordan and the historic relationship between the two countries. The two leaders agreed on the importance of deepening the robust bilateral economic and security cooperation between the two countries. They discussed the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank. Vice President Harris briefed the King on intensive U.S. diplomatic efforts to support the path to a ceasefire in Gaza, and both leaders pledged to further their work to de-escalate tensions. Vice President Harris reiterated the U.S. commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the importance of upholding the status quo at the Haram al-Sharif / Temple Mount.
Vice President Harris and the King agreed on the urgency of addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and pledged to work together closely to mitigate suffering. Both emphasized their mutual commitment to support stability, security and prosperity in Iraq. The Vice President and the King also discussed the economic challenges that Jordan faces, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Vice President highlighted the importance of impactful, high-quality economic reforms. They also discussed the importance of urgently addressing water scarcity through infrastructure upgrades and other reforms, and the Vice President noted the Administration’s prioritization of addressing climate change and its impact on water resources.
