The Statistical Office Assistant must be a U.S. citizen and must be willing to be investigated for a security clearance. The CEA provides the President with objective economic analysis and advice on the development and implementation of a wide range of domestic and international economic policy issues. The Statistical Office Assistant is usually a recent college graduate or a graduate with 1-2 years of work experience. The employee must be detail-oriented and demonstrate an exacting degree of accuracy when preparing, calculating, and fact-checking economic statistical content. Excel proficiency and effective communication skills (verbal and written) are also important. Given that the work environment is fast-paced, with frequent quick-turnaround deadlines, the employee should be a quick study who is able to respond to requests with speed, accuracy, calmness, and flexibility, while maintaining good working relationships with data providers and CEA staff.

The Statistical Office Assistant’s primary duties are to:

  • Support the economic staff by preparing background spreadsheets and charts (in Excel) to aid analysis
  • Support the CEA economic and front office staff as the primary liaison with White House Information Technology (WHIT)
  • Fact-check and edit memoranda on economic data releases written by the economic staff
  • Receive economic data and prepare tables, chart inputs, and chart captions for the monthly Economic Indicators publication (
  • Receive economic data and prepare tables for the statistical appendix in the annual Economic Report of the President (
  • Use public websites and database software (training provided) to find and retrieve data to help develop and prepare various CEA products
  • Gather economic data and information on the Internet and through communication with Federal statistical agency staff
  • Help staff obtain data and advise on its use
