President Biden’s Science Advisor and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Director Dr. Eric Lander released the following statement on former Presidential Science Advisor and OSTP Director Dr. John P. Holdren today receiving the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal.

“Few scientists alive today have contributed so much to how our Nation supports and promotes the advancement of science and technology. From his work to craft a national Climate Action Plan to meet the urgency of the climate crisis during the Obama-Biden Administration, to his leadership during the H1N1 flu and Ebola outbreaks, John has been a fierce advocate for science-based solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

“As a member of PCAST during that time, I saw first-hand just how committed John is to ensuring that science and technology improve the life of every American. His tireless advocacy for robust science funding in Federal budgets helped drive our Nation’s research enterprise forward. Under his leadership, OSTP established government-wide principles for scientific integrity based on research and guidance that is free from politically-motivated suppression or distortion, and we continue his work on those safeguards today. Our Nation is better off thanks to John’s work. I extend my warmest congratulations on this richly-deserved accomplishment.”
