WEEKLY ADDRESS: A focus on Middle-class economics

WASHINGTON, DC — In this week’s address, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro shared the President’s plan, outlined in his State of the Union address earlier this week, to give hardworking families the support they need to make ends meet by focusing on policies that benefit the middle class and those working to reach the middle class. Middle-class economics is working, and we have laid a new foundation, but there is still progress to be made, and the President said he is eager to get to work.

The audio of the address and video of the message will be available online HERE.

Remarks of Julián Castro, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

Spanish Weekly Address

The White House

January 24, 2015

Hi, everybody. I am Julián Castro, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. This week, the President in his State of the Union Address, talked about what we can do to make sure middle-class economics helps more Americans get ahead.

See, after some tough years, and thanks to some tough decisions we made, our economy is creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999.  Our deficits are shrinking.  Our energy production is increasing.  Our troops are coming home.  Thanks to the hard work and the strength of our country, we’ve risen from recession to create our own future.

Now we have to choose what we want that future to look like.  Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do very well?  Or will we develop an economy that generates rising incomes and better opportunities for all?

The President believes the choice is clear.  Today, thanks to a growing economy more and more lives are improving.

That’s what middle-class economics is – the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.

Strong middle-class economics means helping ensure families have better childcare, go to college, have access to paid leave, good health care, a better home, and a good retirement.

This is where we have to go if we’re going to succeed in the new economy.

Our country went through some hard times.  But now, together we’ve got a new future to create.

Thanks, and have a great weekend.
