Readout of Vice President Biden’s Meeting with Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi of Iraq

The Vice President met today in New York with Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi to reaffirm U.S. support for Iraq's stability and security. The Vice President thanked Prime Minister Abadi for Iraq's role as a valuable partner in the fight against ISIL. They discussed the ongoing campaign to defeat ISIL and the urgency of advancing Iraqi-led efforts to liberate Mosul. The Vice President reaffirmed the importance of all countries conducting military operations against ISIL in Iraq to respect Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both leaders underscored the importance of continued U.S. and Iraqi support to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Iraq. The leaders also agreed to redouble efforts to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States to advance key political, economic, and security goals in the years ahead.
