President Obama Nominates Judge Rainey Ransom Brandt to Serve on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, President Obama nominated Judge Rainey Ransom Brandt to serve on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“I am pleased to nominate Judge Rainey Ransom Brandt to serve on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia,” said President Obama. “I am confident she will serve the District of Columbia with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”

Judge Rainey Ransom Brandt has served as a Magistrate Judge in the Criminal Division of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia since 2013, where she is currently the trial team leader for her calendar assignment.  Prior to her transfer into the Criminal Division, Judge Brandt served as a Magistrate Judge in the Domestic Violence Division in 2012.  From 1998 to 2012, Judge Brandt was Special Counsel to the Chief Judge of the Superior Court, where she served as ombudsman to the justice community for prisoner/correctional issues, held leadership roles on committees addressing access to justice, and provided judicial training sessions. Prior to her tenure with the Superior Court, Judge Brandt taught as a full-time professor in the Department of Justice, Law and Criminology at American University, where she remains an Adjunct Associate Professor teaching courses related to criminal justice. She began her legal career serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Michael L. Rankin and later to the Honorable Stephanie Duncan-Peters, both of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Judge Brandt received her J.D. from Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in 1995 and her B.A. from American University in 1989. She also received her M.S. in Justice and Ph.D. in Sociology from American University in 1990 and 1993, respectively.
