Vice President Kamala Harris today hosted Prime Minister Kishida Fumio for a breakfast meeting at the Vice President’s Residence in Washington, D.C., following up on the Vice President’s recent engagements with the Prime Minister in Bangkok in November 2022 and in Tokyo in September 2022.
 
The Vice President welcomed Japan’s new National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, and Defense Buildup Program and expressed appreciation for Japan’s bold steps to strengthen and defend a free and open Indo-Pacific. In this context, the Vice President and Prime Minister discussed regional and global issues, including the threats posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and the Vice President reaffirmed our ironclad commitment to the U.S.-Japan Alliance.
 
In her capacity as Chair of the National Space Council, the Vice President welcomed the signing of the U.S.-Japan Space Framework Agreement, which she discussed with Prime Minister Kishida in Tokyo in September 2022. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in space across multiple sectors including security, commercial, and civil space opportunities.
 
Following-up on the Vice President’s meeting with business executives in Tokyo to strengthen our cooperation through the CHIPS and Science Act and on supply chain matters, the Vice President and the Prime Minister discussed enhancing our economic security and our growing cooperation on semiconductor manufacturing, research and development, and supply chain resilience. They also discussed efforts to address the climate crisis and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
