Readout of National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s Meeting with Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Alicia Bárcena Ibarra

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan hosted Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena Ibarra and Mexican officials at the White House to discuss a range of issues of mutual priority and concern.
 
During the meeting, they committed to continue addressing the root causes of migration and increase enforcement along our shared border. National Security Advisor Sullivan outlined recent U.S. efforts to expand access to safe, orderly, legal migration pathways. They also discussed the Government of Mexico’s plan to establish an international multipurpose space in southern Mexico to provide refugee and labor pathways for vulnerable people in Mexico.
 
Both officials committed to accelerate cooperation to prevent arms trafficking and reduce the flow of illicit synthetic drugs to better protect our communities from harm.
 
National Security Advisor Sullivan and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Bárcena discussed the situation in Venezuela, and National Security Advisor Sullivan reaffirmed U.S. willingness to alleviate sanctions in response to concrete steps toward free and fair elections. They also discussed Haiti, including Kenya’s consideration of leading a multinational force to Haiti in response to the Haitian government’s request for security assistance.
 
The two also discussed our agenda to promote inclusive prosperity in North America and spread this economic dynamism throughout the Americas via the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity. They discussed working together within the G20 to mobilize additional concessional financing from the World Bank.
