White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar issued the following statement on the passing of former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter:

“I join President Biden in offering heart-felt condolences to the family of Dr. Ash Carter, who served our nation with great dedication and distinction as the Secretary of Defense. I had the great honor of working with Secretary Carter while I served as Director of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency.

His commitment to our country’s national security was unparalleled, and he brought wisdom and a comprehensive perspective to the challenges at hand. The same week he announced the groundbreaking decision to open all combat positions to qualified women for the first time in U.S. history, we traveled to Boston to visit leading-edge researchers and entrepreneurs building the essential new technologies for our future national security. I had been looking forward to working with him again as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Secretary Carter was a treasured mentor and colleague. My heart goes out to Stephanie and his children Ava and Will.”
