Fact Sheet: Trump Administration Announces the Most Ambitious Set of Science Initiatives This Century
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit, the Trump Administration launched the most ambitious set of science initiatives in decades, representing over $6 billion in investments across the Federal Government, industry, academia, and philanthropy to usher in a New Golden Age of Science.
The Summit builds on Science: A New Golden Age, a report authored by White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios to President Trump. The report was written in response to the President’s directive to revitalize the American scientific enterprise. Today, America’s largest Federal research agencies and partners across the science ecosystem launched whole-of-nation efforts to position the United States to lead in a new era of scientific discovery. These initiatives will equip scientists with the tools to harness SI-driven scientific revolution, support the best and brightest American STEM students and early-career scientists, revive the pursuit of ambitious national scientific missions, and encourage the creation of new scientific institutions.
“Today marks the most transformative day for the American scientific enterprise since the reshaping of the Federal research ecosystem following World War II. The efforts announced today will channel billions of dollars across our science ecosystem to realize the new scientific opportunities that now exist.” said Director Kratsios. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ushering in a New Golden Age of Science powered by super intelligence, a return to merit, and bold national missions that will inspire Americans for generations to come.”
The Trump Administration continues to pursue a whole-of-nation approach to renew American Science for a New Golden Age of Discovery. With today’s announcements, President Trump is forging new partnerships across government, industry, academia, and philanthropy to lay the foundation for the next generation of American scientific leadership.
EQUIPPING AMERICAN SCIENTISTS WITH SUPER INTELLIGENCE: Super intelligence (SI) will be the greatest accelerant of scientific progress in human history and will transform every scientific discipline. President Trump continues to prioritize American scientists by ensuring broad access to the compute and scientific instrumentation needed for SI-enabled scientific research.
- The Trump Administration announced $2.4B in SI for science tools and compute credits for the Genesis Mission Consortium from eleven industry partners, which will support over 15 Federal agencies working towards National Science & Technology Challenges.
- Industry partner commitments include NVIDIA ($1B), AMD ($500M), OpenAI ($200M), $150M each from Anthropic and Google, $100M each from AMP and Emerald AI, and $50M each from AWS, Armada, Crusoe, and Micron. This follows the expansion of the Genesis Mission in July to over 15 Federal agencies and a $5 billion Federal commitment to support National Science & Technology Challenges across energy, health, space, and more.
- The Trump Administration announced historic investments in scientific computing through state and regional SI infrastructure hubs, making advanced SI resources more widely available to researchers across the country.
- More than 14 universities across 10 states launched the Southeast Regional SI Computing Consortium to build and share leadership-class compute infrastructure for scientific research.
- Universities, industry, and the State of Georgia announced a $1 billion investment in scientific computing and related workforce training efforts for students and faculty.
- Five universities across North and South Carolina joined together to launch a regional compute hub, unlocking SI-enabled science for researchers across the region.
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE) announced an investment of over $100 million in SI-enabled scientific instrumentation and autonomous laboratories to increase scientific productivity and unlock new modes of research. This follows NSF’s July announcement of a $400 million investment in programmable cloud labs to accelerate and democratize access to science.
REFOCUSING ON THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST: President Trump has replaced DEI with merit across the Federal R&D enterprise, ensuring high-potential American STEM students and early-career scientists receive the resources and support they need early in their careers to pursue ambitious opportunities at the frontiers of science and technology.
- The Trump Administration is announcing new merit-based K-12 STEM opportunities focused on gifted students and meaningful hands-on technical learning.
- The Trump Administration revived the NSF Young Scholars Program, funded primarily by philanthropy and inexplicably abandoned in 1996, to invest in students in grades 3-12 on the basis of demonstrated mathematics ability.
- DOE launched the Battelle-Genesis Mission High School Fellowship to provide advanced high school students with transformative hands-on research experiences at DOE National Laboratories.
- The Trump Administration is strengthening investments in American STEM PhD students, ensuring the STEM PhD remains a desirable pathway for America’s most talented students to continue their technical training.
- The Trump Administration launched the Genesis Mission Fellowship, a $100 million initiative for students to pursue accelerated four-year PhDs with dual competency in super intelligence and another science or engineering discipline and research experiences embedded in industry and a DOE National Laboratory.
- NSF launched a 6-year Integrated Bachelors-to-PhD program, enabling promising students to complete doctoral studies on an accelerated timeline, and speeding up their contributions to the American scientific enterprise. This builds off of NSF’s July announcement of an innovative accelerated 4-year PhD program co-funded by industry.
- The Trump Administration launched Generation Discovery, which will bring a hundred exceptional early-career scientists into the NIH’s Intramural Research Program, enabling early-career researchers to do bold, ambitious work at the most pivotal stages in their career. This continues NIH’s FY2026 support for the largest ever cohort of early-stage investigators in history.
BRINGING BACK NATIONAL MISSIONS: From the Manhattan Project to the Apollo Program, some of America’s greatest scientific achievements have come from focused national missions that united the Nation’s brightest minds behind an ambitious common goal. President Trump has brought back National Missions in super intelligence, quantum, fusion, and space exploration that will excite Americans for generations to come.
- NASA and DOE solidified a historic partnership to develop nuclear power and space nuclear fuels. NASA and DOE will collaborate to design, build, and deploy multiple space systems, including NASA’s Space Reactor-1, a nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars expected to launch in 2028, as well as Lunar Reactor-1, the first fission reactor on the lunar surface. This MOU will support implementation of President Trump’s December 2025 Executive Order on “Ensuring American Space Superiority” and NSTM-3 launching a National Initiative for American Space Nuclear Power.
- DOE announced the Quantum Computing Priority Applications, a set of eight key problems that will guide the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, a $215 million initiative to fund teams to demonstrate the world’s first fault-tolerant, scientifically relevant quantum computers. These challenges will help achieve the goals set out in President Trump’s June 2026 Executive Order “Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation.”
- NSF launched two $33 million Grand Research Challenge (GRC) prize competitions in Quantum+X applications and synthetic multicellularity. These challenges will facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration, attract non-traditional entrants, and form cross-sector teams to spur rapid advances in use-inspired basic discovery.
- This week, the NIH, DOE, and Biohub launched a $1.8B virtual biology initiative to create the data and modeling foundation for virtual cells, which will develop SI models that can better predict how cells and biological systems respond to disease and develop potential interventions. This initiative will support Bio Genesis, a national mission to double the pace of biomedical innovation within the next five to ten years.
BUILDING INSTITUTIONS THAT ACCELERATE DISCOVERY: President Trump is creating new institutions of discovery to enable American Scientists to pursue major scientific and technical objectives that fall outside of disciplines and conventional funding mechanisms.
- The Trump Administration is supporting X-Labs across agencies, a new generation of independent research organizations that give multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers the autonomy and resources to tackle specific technical challenges.
- The Trump Administration launched the X-Labs Consortium with over $310 million in industry and philanthropic commitments to support Federally-funded X-Labs teams with advanced scientific instrumentation and facility space. This builds on the $1.5 billion NSF X-Labs initiative announced in May, which has supported X-Labs across scientific instrumentation, quantum systems, physical SI, predictive biology, and next-generation computation.
- The Trump Administration recognizes that metascience, or applying the scientific method to evaluate how we fund and conduct science, is necessary to evaluate the impact of new experiments and maximize return on Federal investments in research.
- NSF, DOE, NASA, and DOW launched new metascience initiatives to inform how they fund and conduct science. Agencies will run experiments and analyze data to better identify exceptional ideas, empower talented researchers, reduce unnecessary friction, and accelerate the pace of discovery.
- The NSF and the United Kingdom Research and Innovation Metascience Unit announced metascience cooperation to measure research impact, improve research review, and test new tools for science, laying the foundation for an International Network of Metascience Units. This announcement builds on the U.S.-led Kyoto Vision for a New Golden Age of Science.
