Sources and how the estimate works

Each price drop is calculated from the February 2025 value to the August 2026 value: (August value ÷ February value − 1) × 100. The calculator applies that percentage change to the monthly amount you enter and multiplies the result by 12.

The buyer-household preset estimates spending among purchasers. When available, it divides the BLS annual population mean by the detailed table’s reported purchase rate and then by 12. Broader categories use practical estimates. Adjust every amount to match your household. View household spending source.

Why is the home fuel & firewood preset $164.20 a month? It is a buyer-only annualized estimate for the small share of households reporting fuel oil, propane, kerosene, or firewood purchases. Those households often buy heating fuel in large seasonal deliveries. Across all households, including non-buyers, the average is only $10.44 a month.

Food rows use BLS U.S. city-average retail prices for the exact product shown. Other rows use not-seasonally-adjusted BLS consumer price indexes. Average retail prices and CPI indexes are different measures; both are national benchmarks and may not match your local receipts. BLS explains the difference.

The data do not establish why a price changed. Missing October 2025 observations do not affect the February-to-August endpoint calculation. Data checked September 15, 2026.
